Belmont Stakes Preview

The 152nd running of the Belmont Stakes will be like none other in history. The grandstand that once held 90,000 fans for Justify’s Triple Crown run will be empty. Instead of being the final leg of the Triple Crown, the race will kick off the biggest stretch in horse racing. One of the races defining traits, its whopping 1 and 1/2 mile distance, has also been trimmed down to 1 and 1/8 miles for the health of the horses. The field is also smaller this year, with only 10 horses in the field, so lets break them down.

1. Tap It To Win (6/1)

Trained by Mark Casse, Tap It To Win has a legitimate shot in this race on the rail. With three wins in 6 career starts, this horse likes to come out of the gate hot. Don’t be surprised if jockey John Velazquez has this horse in front early in the race.

2. Sole Volante (9/2)

Sole Volante is arguably the most accomplished horse in the field outside of the favorite Tiz The Law. He has never finished outside of the top three in his career, with four wins, and one finish in second and third in six career starts. This horse is a question mark however, as he generally runs as a closer, finishing strong down the stretch to win, but is coming in on a quick turnaround after a win only 9 days ago. The Belmont is a much tougher field than that race was, and with such short rest you have to wonder if Sole Volante will have the stamina to finish this race strong.

3. Max Player (15/1)

Max Player is an absolute wild card in this race, and at 15/1 odds, he may be worth a shot. He has only run 3 career races, winning two and finishing second in the other, and has not raced since February 1, which he won at 1 1/8 miles, the same distance as today. As a closer, if he’s within a few lengths at the final turn he will have a legitimate chance to win.

4. Modernist (15/1)

Modernist has won twice in his 5 career starts, with both wins coming at this distance, and likes to get out in front early and press the pace, which he did in both wins. From the #4 gate he has a great chance to get out in front early and run the race Bill Mott wants.

5. Farmington Road (15/1)

Farmington Road has won only once in 6 six starts, and finished fourth in his last race. This horse tends to finish strong, but never really get going when it needs to. With a field that will have some pacesetters take the lead early, he may be too far back to make a real move.

6. Fore Left (30/1)

Fore Left was a late addition to the Belmont field after not racing since February. This horse has 4 wins in 9 starts, with all of the wins coming on dirt similar to today’s track. This horse has won all over the globe, and was originally slated to be on the undercard today, but the move up will likely prevent him from adding another win to that collection.

7. Jungle Runner (50/1)

Despite having 2 wins in 8 starts, Jungle Runner has absolutely no chance today. With only 3 starts in 2020, he has lost by a combined 63 lengths. Against a strong field, this horse is looking for a middle of the pack finish at best.

8. Tiz the Law (6/5)

Tiz the Law is the odds on favorite today, and the horse with the best chance at winning the Triple Crown. With 4 wins in 5 starts, he has been dominant since his debut last summer and has not lost in 2020. This horse should be in the top 5 the whole race, and will make a strong run down the stretch.

9. Dr. Post (5/1)

This horse does not have much experience, winning 2 of 3 career starts, and has not raced since late April in a race he won. Dr Post has not lost as a 3 year old, but has not run from this distance or faced a field remotely close to one this talented, but has the talent himself to contend here.

10. Pneumatic (10/1)

Another lightly raced horse with a lot of potential, Pneumatic will look to set the pace early and get out in front from the outside. With 2 wins in three starts this horse certainly has the talent to hang around and remain close throughout the entire race.

Overall, there is value spread out all across the field, and there’s a realistic chance we see an upset win. Our writers made our picks for the race, and whether you bet or not its fun to watch the race and follow along.

Dylan: Tap It To Win

Alex: Sole Volante

Ryan: Fore Left

Ben: Max Player
