Interview with 4-Star Basketball Recruit: Wesley Cardet

Wesley Cardet, the ultra talented 6-foot-6 combo guard from Ft. Lauderdale, says that the college that he commits to is getting a “winner, someone who is coachable, has strong work ethic, plays both ends of the court, and who goes hard on and off the court”.

Cardet is a top-5 recruit in the class of 2021 in the state of Florida. He has already been offered by some of the top programs around the Nation. He has tremendous positional-size which I believe gives him great court vision. He has great handle on the ball and can shoot it, all while playing hard on the defensive side of the ball as well. He is a rare do it all player, who is a can’t miss prospect in his class.

Cardet holds offers from just about every great basketball program in Florida; those schools being Miami, Florida, USF, and Florida Gulf Coast. While these are some very intriguing offers, Cardet tells me that, “location doesn’t matter” as far as where he is going to choose to go to school. This is great to hear for fans of schools up north who have offered the young guard.

One of those schools from “up north” is St. John’s. Cardet had a zoom meeting with Mike Anderson and the Red Storm staff today and would be a perfect fit into Mike Anderson’s up-tempo, full court style of basketball.

Cardet told me that he’s also completed zoom meetings with “Maryland, Iona, and Alabama” and that “In the future, another with Alabama, Howard, and Kansas State”.

Many predict that he will choose Alabama, as they have been coming on very strong (as evident by how they have already scheduled a second zoom meeting). According to an interview with 247sports, the Alabama coaching staff checks up on Cardet often.

Seeing Iona listed amongst those other schools is pretty incredible and would be very rare in the past. Of course the reason that he lists them as a contending school at the moment is because of recently hired new head coach, Rick Pitino. This is yet another example of the Pitino Effect. Will Cardet become the first 4-Star prospect to commit to the Gaels? It’s something that would’ve been laughed at in the past but now is a real possibility and would be a ground breaking commitment for Iona.

Howard is the latest school to make Wesley Cardet an offer. I asked him if HBCUs are appealing to him and his response was, “HBCUs are definetly appealing to me. My mom and dad graduated from an HBCU. I believe its all about the fit and if an HBCU is the best fit, then that’s an option that I would consider.” After landing 2020 recruit Makur Maker, it appears as if Howard, and all HBCUs could be something to watch out for in future years.

Cardet talks about all of the schools that have offered him and says “I will narrow it down once the college basketball season starts”.

Whoever lands Wesley Cardet is getting one of the most well-rounded players in the nation and someone who will be a cornerstone piece to any program for years to come.
