Can LaMelo Ball be the Knicks Savior?

The short and simple answer to this question is yes. Yes he can.  In my opinion there is literally no better prospect than LaMelo Ball in the 2020 NBA draft. Recently there have been rumors that Ball’s camp is pushing him towards landing in New York. As a smart New York sports fan, I know way better than to believe this statement.  When you grow up a fan of the Knicks, you know that if you expect anything good to happen it will only lead to big disappointment.  So instead I expect the worst. However, if the Knicks do have the opportunity to draft LaMelo Ball they must capitalize on it.  A young backcourt of Ball and RJ Barrett will take the Eastern Conference by storm and I believe that they would instantly become a playoff team.  Ball’s basketball timeline is far from the traditional route. He committed to UCLA as an 8th grader, then got pulled out of High School by his father (Lavar) before his junior season, played professionally overseas as a sixteen year old, then came back to the US to play his final season of high school at Spire Academy. This past season Ball averaged 17.0 PPG, 6.8 AST, and 7.6 RPG overseas for the Illawarra Hawks, making him a can’t miss prospect in the 2020 draft. He excels in all facets on the offensive and even notched a triple double this past season.

The one concern many scouts have for the 18 year old guard is his commitment on the defensive side of the ball.  However, after watching how his older brother Lonzo blossomed into a top defender at the point guard position I have no doubt that LaMelo will be able to do the same.  He has tremendous instincts which cannot be taught and has a very long athletic frame which will allow for him to disrupt passing lanes. Also, if the past is any indication of the future, high level free agents are attracted to teams that have a great point guard who can distribute to them. Ball is undoubtedly an extremely gifted passer which will help to attract top free agents to New York, something that the Knicks have not been able to do for many years.  LaMelo Ball can save the mess that is the New York Knicks.
