Sideline Sports CBB Top 25 Week One

The first week of the college basketball season has come and gone, and boy was it beautiful. We saw upsets, blowouts, and ranked battles that will be talked about for years to come. A week is a long time in this sport, and that means its time for a new set of rankings. (Ties sorted by alphabetical order, individual rankings do not do ties)

Movers and Shakers

Ties All Around:

The problem with having a four person voting committee is that there isn’t a lot of variance, and this has happened twice this week, and occurred in our preseason poll. At the top we have Purdue, Texas, and Villanova tied for sixth, and towards the bottom SEC foes are linked as Kentucky and Tennessee are locked in at 16. It is a big week of games, so expect some more shake up here next week.

UCLA Cements Its Status:

The Bruins have been questioned by our staff all offseason, and they answered our doubts with an overtime win in this week’s marquee matchup against Villanova. This sets up a potential 1 vs 2 matchup in the coming weeks, as they are slated to face Gonzaga on November 22, and the toughest opponent each team faces up until then is Bellarmine.

Hello and Goodbye:

Two teams dropped from the rankings this week, as Michigan State’s opening night loss against Kansas bumped them from the rankings, and Florida State fell to an in state rival whole replaced them in the rankings. The Gators debut at #23, following their outstanding 16 point win against Florida State, and look scary with Colin Castleton inside, as he recorded a 15 point, 16 rebound, 6 block performance against the Noles. Virginia Tech debuts at #25, similarly to how they debuted in our first in season poll last year, hopefully the Hokies can maintain their ranking rather than losing it immediately as they did in their last appearance here.
